“Community, Identity, Stability”
Aldous Huxley, Brave New World, 1932

“It is also because man is a God unto man that man is a wolf unto man.”
Pierre Bourdieu, Leçon sur la Leçon. In: Pierre Bourdieu, “In Other Words: Essays Towards a Reflexive Sociology”, Stanford University Press, 1990, p.196

In his works, Niklas Goldbach investigates the concept of dystopia, a negative utopia, which highlights menace in a fictional space. Inspired by his own fears and melancholy, he films empty urban spaces, architectures and landscapes that touch him personally. Based on these images of existent spaces, he creates a fictional universe where the person as an individual no longer has any role to play. The protagonists in his works are an archetype he calls “placeholders”. Their status in society is undetermined. The beholder finds varying numbers of placeholders, dressed in black and white, as clones wandering through the empty rooms. Yet rather than bringing the  surroundings to life, the placeholders only intensify the solitary and threatening nature of a disturbingly beautiful and icy world, apparently rigorously controlled both politically and socially.

Niklas Goldbach is showing a video work filmed especially for Rohkunstbau in a suite at The Mandala, a Berlin luxury hotel. Inspired by Atlantis, he transposes a scene with a minimalist aesthetic into the baroque with himself acting in a tenfold image – a reference to the ten kings of Atlantis. They move in an apparently perfect world, stylised down to the last detail. However, they are unable to communicate with each other – and since they are both one and the same, they ultimately reduce themselves and their existence to absurdity.
